Minimum Credentials, Experience and general requirements
Must have valid Merchant Mariner Credential. OS required. AB preferred
STCW preferred but not required
Valid TWIC
Ability to pass a drug test per coast guard regulations
The Deckhand have a very demanding job. Long hours, physically demanding and its key that you have a good attention span. There will be lifting, pulling, and operating heavy equipment and objects. Employee must also meet the USCG vision standards for navigation in close quarters. Deck hands will have to work outside in all weather conditions, and must be prepared for heat and cold. Employees may be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells and may at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances. DeForge Maritime takes pride in “Safety First” that’s why we train all employees to use the proper PPE for each task at hand. All employees will be expected to take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose, and skin from irritation and infection. Our Moto is “Everyone goes home safe and sound at the end of each job”

Tasks and Responsibilities under the direction of the Port Engineer:
Maintenance, painting, chipping, cleaning, wiping up, greasing, assisting others
Start up/shut down tug boats
Make and break tows
Pilot barges, calling distances, eyes and ears for the Captain
Line handling, splicing, barge tie ups, knots, heaving lines
Navigation vocabulary, standing watch
Rigging, basic crane operations as a rigger
Engine Room Watches, Reading gauges
Clean and inspect equipment
Basic welding
Keeping inventory, Grocery Shopping
House keeping
SKILLS, APTITUDES, QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to handle stressful situations with focus.
Understanding importance and taking pride and responsibility in mastering the small
things, before mastering the big ones.
Understand and respect the chain of command. Ability to take direction no matter how it is given.
Continuously demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and ownership by being pro active in all situations /tasks.
Physical Aptitudes Required:
Must be able to lift 40 lbs. without restriction; positions involve lifting, pulling, and operating heavy equipment and objects.
Ability to bend, stoop, or squat frequently and climb high steps/ladders several times per day.
Physical dexterity and strength to operate deck machinery; work on equipment that is poorly accessible or in confined workspaces.
Must be able to keep balance/equilibrium while performing duties at various heights.
Ability to work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
Adequate hearing and vision ability per USCG standards.
Proper heat/cold tolerance, working in all weather conditions.
Understand that you will working while exposed to grease, dirt, paint, water, etc. that may regularly be on your skin, hair, and clothing.
